Sam Bankman-Fried's Bail Guarantors to Be Named

A recent ruling in the United States District Court by Judge Lewis Kaplan may result in the identities of the two individuals who signed on as sureties for Sam Bankman-Fried's $250 million bond becoming public, subject to appeal.

Ruling Grants Request for Bail Guarantor Names

Judge Kaplan granted the application by eight major media companies, including Bloomberg, the Financial Times, and Reuters, to reveal the names of the two individuals responsible for guaranteeing the bond. The media companies argued that "the public's right to know Bankman-Fried's guarantors outweighed their privacy and safety rights."

Bankman-Fried Granted Time to Appeal

Bankman-Fried's legal counsel has been given until Feb. 7 to appeal the ruling. Bankman-Fried was released from custody in December 2022 after two unknown individuals, along with his parents, signed on as sureties for the $250 million bond. Bankman-Fried's lawyers have argued that the identities should remain confidential, citing concerns for the individuals' safety and privacy.
