Strengthening Indo-US Tech Partnerships

On the final day of his state visit to Washington, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi convened a high-profile meeting with leading US and Indian tech executives. The purpose of this summit was to promote new defense and technology partnerships and address emerging geopolitical concerns related to China. The meeting included top CEOs like Tim Cook of Apple, Sundar Pichai of Google, and Satya Nadella of Microsoft, along with influential Indian tech leaders like Anand Mahindra and Mukesh Ambani.

A Flourishing Economic Relationship

The welcoming reception held by US President Joe Biden for Modi underscored the "booming" economic relationship between the two nations, as trade has more than doubled over the past decade. Biden emphasized the significant role technology collaboration would play in defining the 21st century and shaping the Indo-US partnership. Echoing Biden's sentiments, Modi highlighted the cooperation between established firms and startups to create a "new world."

India's Growing Geopolitical Importance

Amid the intensifying rivalry between the US and China, Modi's visit signifies a strategic attempt by the Biden administration to strengthen ties with India - the world's most populous nation and fifth-largest economy. While the issue of China wasn't explicitly addressed, a joint statement pointed to territorial disputes in the East and South China Seas, signifying unity and determination to maintain regional stability.

The Power of Diaspora Ties

In addition to meeting with tech and business leaders, Modi also attended a State Department lunch with Vice President Kamala Harris and Secretary of State Antony Blinken. Harris, the first Asian American to hold the Vice President position, used the occasion to reflect on the powerful ties between the US and India. Modi, in turn, praised Harris as "really inspiring." Modi is scheduled to address the Indian diaspora, a community that has historically turned out in strong support for him.

Modi's visit, however, wasn't without controversy. Activists have called on the Biden administration to address allegations of human rights abuses in India. In a rare press conference, Modi responded to questions about minority rights, insisting that there was "no space for any discrimination" in his government. The US officials emphasized the importance of engaging with a rising India for Washington's national security and economic prosperity.
