The U.S. Embassy statement didn't mention the details of their discussion but highlighted that Tracy aims to maintain communication between the two capitals amid the current tensions.

Advocacy for Detained U.S. Citizens

Tracy also plans to advocate for the safety and fair treatment of all U.S. citizens detained in Russia, including Paul Whelan, a corporate security director and former Marine serving a 16-year sentence for espionage. The Biden administration considers Whelan's detainment as wrongful.

Russian Reaction

During their conversation, the Russian Foreign Ministry pointed out the counterproductiveness of the U.S.'s confrontational course. They also expected the ambassador to follow Russian laws and customs and not interfere in the country's internal affairs.
