9 Killed in Mass Shooting at Lunar New Year Celebration

Nine people were killed in a mass shooting on Saturday night after a Lunar New Year celebration in Monterey Park, California.

The male shooter was reported at 10:22 p.m., and the incident occurred at a business on Garvey Ave.

Sgt. Bob Boese of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department stated that the shooting occurred at a business on Garvey Ave in Monterey Park, a city of about 60,000 people located approximately 10 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The city has a large Asian population.

Eyewitness Accounts of the Shooting

Seung Won Choi, who owns a seafood barbecue restaurant across the street from where the shooting occurred, told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into his business and told him to lock the door. They also stated that the shooter had a machine gun and multiple rounds of ammunition, leading Choi to believe the shooting occurred at a dance club.

Saturday was the start of the two-day Lunar New Year festival, one of the largest events of its kind in Southern California.
